College Hills Elementary Faculty Fitness Camp

In the spring of 2008 we worked with College Hills Elementary to offer them an opportunity to join a fitness camp specifically designed for their needs and only including their staff. We met three days a week on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 3:45 right after school commenced. We met at Thomas park, which was used due to it being conveniently located right down the street from the school, for workouts that lasted one hour. The camp was six weeks in duration.

The camp included 25 members of the faculty including teachers, prinicipal, secretary, coaches, and aides.  They were males and females of varying fitness levels and ages. Some participants had an extensive knowledge of working out while others were first timers. This camp also had people with a past history of injuries including shoulder, knee, and back problems. By having two trainers at each session and breaking down the camp into two groups clients were able to push themselves within their own limits and be surrounded by others of their similar ability level. By also having parts of the workout, like warm up and cool down, executed in a big group no one ever felt isolated from the camp as a whole and were able to retain their “team” identity.

Before the start of camp we met with all the campers and put them through an extensive nutrition session to show them how to eat properly to maximize their results. A healthy diet is key to any fitness program and we want to emphasize that to each individual. In addition we also tested their weight and body fat % using the Tanita scale.  During the first week of camp we finished up with one final test, the obstacle course. The obstacle course was a timed event that consisted of running and stations. On the last day of camp we got the group back together and re- tested everyone’s weight, body fat% and obstacle course time. This allowed them to see their gains of a complete fitness regime over a six week period.

The progress and improvements of all the people that participated was amazing, as a staff they lost a total of 45 pounds, 30% bodyfat and improved on their obstacle course time by 25 minutes!  Here are a few testimonials so that you can see what camp was like from the client’s perspective:

TESTIMONIALS

It's hard not to notice the sculpted bodies, "peppy" demeanor, and smiles on the faces of the College Hills faculty.   This is a direct result of the work put in by Jamie, Brandon, Lane, and Charlie of the Train with Charlie staff.   After completing our six week boot camp we have not only increased our fitness levels, but lowered our stress, boosted our energy, and developed a team cohesiveness that is unparalleled!   Twenty-six brave souls tested the boot camp waters from the College Hills staff and we have benefitted immensely from our experience.   We have all developed a much more health conscious lifestyle and our eating habits are much improved.   We also experienced a benefit that was completely unplanned...  the camaraderie on our campus from the non-boot camp participants increased.  Teachers that were not members of the boot camp, or worked out on their own, found themselves making healthier choices at the lunch table and increasing their exercise routine.  As a principal new to this campus it provided me an opportunity to increase relationships with our faculty on a whole new level.  When educators feel comfortable with each other, develop a close bond, and have a common goal; the students benefit from this increased communication and mutual understanding.
I extend many thanks to Charlie and his staff for making our boot camp a positive, life-changing experience.

Sincerely,

Wow... what an amazing and difficult 6 weeks.
We were offered an opportunity at school to participate in a Boot Camp.  I jumped right in feet first and gave it my all.  Actually, I didn't have much to give. A weak back, not much upper body strength, no energy, tired all of the time.... But I stuck it out and more than reached my goal.  With the encouragement and push of our trainers and  my camp buddies, I made it.  I now have a great start to improve myself.  I am sleeping better, have more energy, stronger and most of all... my back is stronger.
Boot Camp was hard work... I am truly grateful I had the opportunity.
Thanks Jamie, Lane, & Brandon!

At our first group meeting, I remember having seroius doubts  that I  would not have a good experience at being challenged. I am a somewhat fit person(just out of shape) and felt that others (not so fit) might keep me back from getting a real workout. I was looking for a jump start into a better workout routine and a start to healthier lifestyle. Boy, was I wrong about not being challenged! I realized on the first workout that I would get out as much as I put into it! The trainers we worked with challenged us everyday on our level with some very interesting (and fun) activities that always kept us moving! As a group it was very rewarding to do something with the people I work with everyday! I got to know others and see that they too were committed to a healthier lifestyle. At the end, I knew my weight had not changed too much , however, to my own suprise and delight I had lost 4% of my body fat!!! That was unexpected and very rewarding in itself. I feel so much better after boot camp, my stregnth is up, my mood is better, pain I had in my hip is gone, and best of all my pants are not so snug anymore! I would recommend TWC bootcamp to anyone (no matter your fitness level), all you need is the desire to make a change towards a healthier, more fit person.

When signing up for bootcamp I was excited to get the opportunity to exercise with fellow co-workers while learning new exercises. But then as I was thinking more about it I began to have concerns about the actual exercises. Concerns such as running and not being able to do the exercises. After several days of bootcamp I realized there was a lot of running and even sprinting! I knew I couldn't sprint - my sprinting was a faster version of jogging but definitely not sprinting. Throughout the 6 weeks the trainers encouraged me and guided me toward the correct form of sprinting. By the last week of bootcamp I was sprinting! And as far as my other concern, no problem. The Trainers personalized the exercises when needed and were excellent at encouraging us to work hard in order to get all that we could out of the boot camp!
