(from Insite Magazine, December 2007)
Charlie Lima has not always been extremely committed to exercise and proper nutrition. He never enjoyed exercise, running, or had a desire to eat healthy before the age of eighteen. Charlie was overweight. He had difficulty running one block and dreaded working out. He loved junk food and would overeat at every opportunity. When it came to unhealthy habits, Charlie had them all. He jokes, “I guarantee you that my habits were probably worse on a daily basis than yours on your most unhealthy day!”
“Why did I eat so unhealthy? Easy,” explains Charlie, “because it was so good! It was also very convenient and very easy to eat unhealthy. When I think back to those days I now realize how much damage I was doing to myself and my metabolism.”
For Charlie, the catalyst for change in his life was exercise. He was accepted into Texas A&M and did not want to arrive to college overweight and out of shape. After about three months he began to notice changes in the way he felt and looked, which motivated him to continue. “Seeing change is extremely important,” explains Charlie. “When you are committing additional time in your day to exercise, along with giving up foods you really enjoy, you must see results so you will continue. Results keep you eating healthy and your workouts consistent. They keep you motivated and inspired!”
Charlie can now honestly say that his passion for overall health has grown each day since he made a commitment to start feeling better about himself. He has participated in two half marathons and is currently training for a full marathon. Charlie’s physical change was truly amazing and it fueled more healthy eating habits. “I have always absolutely loved to eat, and I still do,” he says, “but now I love healthy food because I realize the difference it makes. You will feel better and actually be able to see a difference when you combine healthy eating along with exercise.” His personal experience has led him to help motivate and inspire people every day to be healthy and happy. He is a personal trainer, a nutrition counselor, a motivator, a coach and a good friend to all of his clients.
Charlie got his start in the fitness industry working as a personal trainer while he was a student at Texas A&M. He worked in a private studio off of Harvey, now known as Fitness Together, for Cliff Latham. “I am very grateful to Cliff for all of his guidance and the opportunity he gave me,” says Charlie.
Upon graduating from Texas A&M with a degree in Kinesiology-Sport Management, Charlie decided to work independently and train clients at the Aggieland Fitness Dome. After training there for about a month, he began receiving calls from people who were interested in his personal training services. At the time, he was already working 60 hours a week and had no available time to train them, so he decided to hire a good friend and fellow Aggie to assist him with new clients.
In a short time, the business has grown by leaps and bounds. Train With Charlie, also known as TWC, now has an elite team of nine Personal Trainers and an Office Manager who are “Committed to the Success” of their clients. TWC is an independent personal training service at the Aggieland Fitness Dome. They have been voted “Best Personal Trainer” by the Eagle in 2006 and also have been chosen as the official training team of the Aggieland Fitness Dome. You do not require a membership to train with TWC and they train people of all ages, all fitness levels and have a passion for inspiring their clients to live healthy!
Nutrition counseling is a service that is also available to individuals, families and businesses. This session informs clients of the exact number of calories they are burning daily. A meal plan is designed based on the foods a client likes to eat along with a thorough explanation on the purpose of the meal plan. Charlie understands that eating habits will not change overnight; therefore he explains the importance of progress. Nutrition software is also provided to track those calories.
The staff at Train With Charlie is determined to provide every client with the knowledge and motivation they need to reach their health and fitness goals. Programs vary based on clients’ goals, needs and wants. A complimentary assessment is offered to anyone interested in the services they offer.
